USPS Address Database – Free to Use
The United States Postal Service is the official repository of addresses for the United States. They offer several address verification APIs that are free to use, but they are not designed for bulk address processing or record management.
Steps in the Process of Address Verification
First, a submitted address is standardized. This means that any errors in the house number, street name or city are fixed so that it matches the correct format for USPS addresses.
After a valid address is standardized, it is then compared against the USPS Address Database. If the address does not match the database, it is deemed invalid.
Next, the address is checked against the USPS Delivery Sequence File-Second Generation (DSF2) to see if it is in the delivery system. This file contains a record of every address in the system, whether it is residential, business, seasonal, or vacant.
Finally, the address is matched against the USPS NCOALink database to check if an address has changed since it was last mailed. This database includes 160 million permanent change-of-address records and is a key tool for calculating the mailing fees.
These tools are designed to help you avoid expensive mistakes by identifying erroneous or inaccurate addresses quickly and easily. They also allow you to cross reference that information with a batch data append tool, which locates additional information associated with a particular address.
